The Favorite

Let me preface this story by saying that I am the favorite child of the Bain family. Also, my family has learned to embrace my mom's ever-changing mind and try to remain as light-hearted as possible through the course of her disease. Tonight my mom and sister were cuddling in my parent's bed and talking about the three baby portraits that hang on the opposite wall (one for each of her gorgeous children). My sister asked my mom to tell her about each of the three pictures. My mom pointed to the middle portrait of a little boy and said, "That one is my George and he's my favorite. I don't know who those other two babies are." At least El and I think this is one of the funniest things my mom has said in a long time!

Watch What You Say...

Hmmm , what do you know? Another Luke story. The other day, after an afternoon meltdown when I wouldn't let Luke sit on a stranger's bike at the splash park, I told him I would gladly drive him by the Lake near his neighborhood so he could look at the people riding bikes. There happens to be a Dam at this lake. At least that is what the educated Nanny thinks it is. Luke is always asking what things are, and for the most part I try to tell him, in real terms, what they are/do/mean. He's smart, so I never thought twice about answering his question, "What's that big white thing in the water?" I explained it was a Dam and that Dams keep water from flowing too quickly. We also talked about Beavers and the Dams they build in rivers. He was very interested in our conversation, and I, the proud Nanny, was excited to have taught him something new. That excitement lasted until his next question (about what the Dam does, or " dood " as he says) when I realized

Congrats Reid

I often feel I don't give my husband enough credit for all of his hard work. Not only is he a naturally intelligent guy, he always goes the extra mile to make his work 110% accurate. I can say this because I have waited on him many nights to finish proofing models, decks, and slides. Blah! So, after only a year and a half at O.W., he has been promoted to a Consultant! I am so proud of his hard work and dedication to making his work outstanding! Reidie, you're amazing!

Something New

I can't sleep. It is 12:16 a.m. according to my Mac. I have the fan on, a new InStyle , and a cozy bed all to myself...but nothing is luring me to my favorite place- dreamland. That said, I have now resorted to blogging, Diet Dr. Pepper (that's gonna help my inability to sleep), and Starburst . I have tried to fall asleep, but when thoughts are churning in my mind as they are tonight I know sleep will not come easy. It is tonight that I have thought of "something new." An exercise that might free me from what my mouth won't let me express as easily. I can't share it yet, it is not finished, and permission has not been granted from those whose stories I include. That's all for now...visit often. Note:  To friends and family who will be worried I am not divulging my secret "something new"- I am not pregnant, we are not moving, I am not changing jobs (unless they move to the suburbs and get a live-in. HA!), and don't freak out that I am going to

True Love

I have read this before, but it was recently sent to me again by a very special friend, Kynda Almefty. I, too, wanted to share it with all of you. It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.                                  A nurse took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. She saw him looking at his watch and decided, since she was not busy with another patient, she would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so she talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, she asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told her no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. The nurse inqu

The Charmer

Luke's Mommy and Daddy went on a date tonight and I got to keep the kids! Lukie and Mare hanging out on a Saturday night is a recipe for fun. So, go figure, Luke said two adorable things I have to share. While we were eating at Purple Cow (for all you Little Rockians I was at the Dallas location) there was a little girl sitting at the table next to us that was misbehaving. Her mom pointed to Luke, who was sitting with me and Emerson, and said, "Look, that little boy is obeying his mom and sitting very nicely in his chair." Being a nanny, I have learned to ignore comments like this unless they are said directly to me. Luke, however, understood what the lady said. He looked at me and said, "No, your not My Mommy you're My Mare." Ahhhhh, Luke, you melt my heart. Then later tonight when I was getting Luke settled down for bed. We were rocking in his chair and talking about his fun day. I said, "Lukie, you are sweet as pie," and gave him an eskimo kiss.

The Kiddos

Sweet Emerson Kate

I haven't written much about this little girl named Emme. It is Emme that has changed the most over the past four months. I have seen her learn to walk, learn to push her brother back :), and say some pretty cute little words. While Luke has learned to recognize my presence as meaning that his parents are leaving for a bit, I am always welcomed by Emerson with a huge smile. I am not allowing myself to credit her smile to knowing that my purse has also arrived! Now, about her personality. She says "Uh oh" about everything! One day I dropped an entire bucket of mac and cheese on the kitchen floor and Emme's response to the situation was a profound, "Uh oh!" Looks like she knows the perfect response to all sticky situations! She is also a total dare devil. She has taken to climbing onto the couch over the past few months. She loves climbing on top of anything and everything, dangerous or not! The most recent discovery is her climbing onto Luke's little tabl

Luke the Dancer

One night Reid and I took Luke and Emme to dinner while their parents were out for a concert. Reid was late leaving work and we met him at our apartment so we could all ride together. Luke, of course, said he wanted to see all of Mare and Reido Burrito's toys. Poor kid was only slightly disappointed when all he saw was a guitar. Enter Reid to play the guitar and this video is what was captured of Luke's excitement.
