Months 10 & 11

Olivia is 11 months old! Oh, what fun she is these days. A lot has happened these past few months and since I skipped the 10 month post I'll just dive right in and try to re-cap all of it.

- Stats. Olivia weighs 13 pounds 1 ounce and is 26 inches long. She is wearing size 3-6 or 6 months clothes. She wears a lot of one piece outfits or dresses. Her waist is so small that most pants fall right off. However, Zutano pants fit her perfectly. Love that brand! She is also wearing size 2 diapers.

- Diapers. Oh, the diapers. This past month we had a little issue with Pampers. Olivia had been wearing them since 23 weeks gestation in the NICU and they were fine. Then, in February she developed a horrible rash that presented itself when we started a new box of diapers. It wasn't like normal diaper rash and it was all along her lower abdomen. Nothing made it better. After a trip to the doctor and many questions to Google I found out that she wasn't the only baby who had a reaction like this. Reid and I agreed it was most definitely an issue with the diapers. I immediately went to Whole Foods and bought Earth's Best chlorine-free diapers and within 36 hours of the switch the rash looked SO much better. Two weeks later it is completely healed. And, I can't tell you how happy I've been with the Earth's Best brand!

- Teeth. Little Miss O is a teething machine. She has her bottom middle teeth and is getting her top lateral incisors (the two on either side of her top middle teeth). The top middle teeth are going to come through any day now. Fingers crossed.

- Sleep. See diapers and teething. Bless her heart. For the past month (maybe longer) we've totally regressed in the sleep department - like, she's probably only slept through the night five times. I'm terrible at the whole cry it out thing. And, on top of that, knowing her reason for waking was likely because her teeth hurt or her rash bothered her when she wet her diaper made it completely out of the question. The past couple of nights we've been slowly getting back on track. She goes to bed around 7:30pm, wakes at 5am to eat, and goes back to sleep until 8:30am. She usually takes one morning catnap and we've been transitioning to afternoon naps in her crib over the past couple of days, as well.

- Food. We introduced pureed baby food in January and she hated it. Gagged, spit it out, and cried until I would nurse her. After a not so great month in the weight gain department her doctor suggested that we move on to table food. Boy, am I glad we did because she loves it! So far her favorite foods are turkey, chicken, broccoli, sweet potato, avocado, apricots, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, oatmeal and all flavors of Yobaby yogurt. So far she's eating two meals a day - lunch and dinner - and this weekend we are going to introduce egg whites at breakfast. She gained well at our last doctor visit so all of her hard work has payed off! On top of the two meals a day she is nursing 5-6 times a day for about 15-20 minutes.

- Development. Back in December we started getting therapy evaluations. Her pediatrician didn't see the need, but for our peace of mind we wanted to get a foot in the door at the private therapy center we would use if a need were to arise. After several months of hounding him for a referral, he finally humored our request. Olivia has been evaluated for occupational, physical and speech therapy. She tested either right on track or a little ahead for her adjusted age. Each therapist gave us milestones to watch for and so far she is hitting all of them earlier than expected. She isn't sitting on her own quite yet, but she is going to be crawling any day now. I think she could sit on her own it she slowed down enough to really try. As soon as she's on the ground she wants to move onto her stomach so she can push up and rock on all fours. She is one determined child and it has been so fun watching her figure out how to do new things. We continue to be so in awe of her!

Olivia,
I can't believe we are one month away from your first birthday. You are such an expressive, sweet, and happy girl - an absolute delight! People often say that the days are long, but I haven't found that to be true. Our days fly by and most nights I find myself wanting to go wake you up and rock you just to get the chance to be with you again. I sit and watch you play, moving around as busy as can be, and I look at you with such wonder. It is hard to believe that whether or not you would be here today was ever a question. My sweet girl, I want you to know that God has something very special planned for your life. You are marvelous, Olivia Bain, and I'm so very glad you are mine. I love you as deep as the ocean and as high as the sky!
Love,
Mommy

  1. She is too cute. Love all the pics of her trying to get off the chair. Prayer really does work and she is living proof of it!

  2. she has the most amazing facial expressions! Love her!

PS-- I read somewhere recently that Target brand diapers are chlorine free. That's what we typically use once our kids get to size 3 diapers and are out of the explosive poop stage. Just an FYI in case you ever want to try a different brand (and to save some $$$- Target brand are also the cheapest!).

  3. I feel the same exact way....I have more than once picked my daughter up out of her crib just to be with her a little longer. I don't know where the days have gone. She will be 10 months on Sunday. It took so long to get her here and the past 10 months have just flown by. I wish it would all last longer.

  4. Sweet girl! She is so BEAUTIFUL!

Eliza-Grace had a similar problem with pampers. Everything was fine and then at about 6 weeks the rash came. I swear one of my closest friends who is a NICU nurse and kept her some when I first went back to work didn't believe me that I was trying everything I could to fix it. She can only wear the cheapest huggies. If you put a pampers, luvs, sams brand on her for 5 minutes it comes right back. I pulled her out of a daycare because they put someone else's diapers on her 2 days in a row.

  5. Hi I've been reading your blog for a while just thought I'd comment. You should really try cloth diapers! they aren't as hard as you would think the modern cloth diapers are actually so much like a disposable. Plus they'll save you lots of money! Bumgenius 4.0's are the ones we use. I'm sure you could find a cloth diaper store in your area if you wanted to see some in person. Or google is always a good place to start.

Mary Grace

At 2:00 am this morning, our sweet Mary Grace was welcomed to Heaven. We found out this afternoon that she had a large brain hemorrhage. Reid and I spent three precious hours holding our daughter tonight. The nurses wrapped a pink bow around her little head and we swaddled her in a soft pink elephant blanket. During those hours, we told Mary Grace how proud we were of her fight, how she fulfilled our dreams of one day having a daughter to call "Gracie," and we even took a little nap, snuggled together as a family. If we told her we loved her once, we told her a thousand times. We prayed over her and gave her back to the Lord. We miss her more than words can say. I feel like we were punched in the stomach today and left with the wind knocked out of our lungs. Its so hard to understand "why?" in all of this. Tonight when we left the hospital, Reid turned on this song by David Crowder Band and we listened to it on repeat the whole way home. Its the exact state of our

One day at a time

For the first time in my life I feel like I'm truly living one day at a time. Reid and I had a pretty good day yesterday. We were able to sleep in which was wonderful. Reid made us lunch and we sat outside in the backyard. It was a beautiful day and being outside did a lot of good for my mental health. :) There were still a lot of hard moments as memories from the night before would come rushing back to mind. We miss our sweet babies so much. Olivia had a good day yesterday. It was uneventful (which is a very good thing in the NICU) and they were able to turn down some of her medicine. We call every morning to check on our sweet girl and her nurse was quick to tell us how feisty our daughter is. We picked up on that in her first day of life, but it was funny to hear that someone else had observed the same. We are so in love with our feisty little Olivia. After we left the hospital, Reid and I went on a dinner date. It was so good for us to get out and feel like we

Madelyn Barrett

I really don't even know where to begin or how to write this post. I've put it off for several days hoping that maybe if I let things sink in a little more it would be easy. This will never be easy. As you know, we welcomed three beautiful little girls into the world on Friday afternoon. We had hoped to continue to "buy time" and hold off on delivery for several more weeks. God has always had a plan much bigger than either Reid or I could ever imagine. I have to chose to believe, everyday, that somehow this all fits perfectly into that plan. We knew from the time of her delivery that Madelyn was struggling the most. The circumstances surrounding her birth caused a lot of trauma to her tiny body. After a day of fighting for a positive outcome, the neonatologist came to visit with us and told us it was time to let her go. Late Saturday night we went to the NICU to hold our precious baby for the first and last time. She was absolutely perfect and looked just like h

Surprise!

God has blessed our family with quite a surprise! Olivia is getting a little brother or sister in early December. We are thrilled! As of today I am nine weeks along. We went to the doctor several weeks ago and were able to see the tiny bundle and hear the heartbeat. Everything looks great and we are so thankful! I'll share more details in the next few weeks. :)

The babies are here!

Friends and Family, Late this afternoon we became the proud parents of three little girls. Madelyn Barrett: 1 pound Olivia Bain: 1 pound, 5 ounces Mary Grace: 1 pound, 10 ounces The babies are stable in the NICU  tonight and we are hopeful that God is going to move mountains as they grow and thrive. Madelyn's (Baby B) amniotic sac ruptured on Sunday night. We had a sonogram done each day this week to check her heart beat, fluid level, and position. The doctors told us Friday morning that she was not likely to make it and that delivering her was not an option as it put too much risk on Mary Grace and Olivia. Once again, we were told to wait and see. Around 4:30 Friday afternoon I delivered Madelyn. The NICU team was here immediately to begin working on her. When the doctor checked on the status of the other girls, he saw signs of infection and he immediately performed an emergency c-section to deliver Mary Grace and Olivia. We have seen the Lord's mercy through each to
